Birding & Breakfast with Wildlife in Historic Canal Zone

About this experience

Experience the magic of Panama's wildlife in an intimate backyard setting at a historic former Canal Zone home in Albrook, just minutes from downtown Panama City. Your morning begins as tropical birds descend upon the lush garden sanctuary. Watch toucans, motmots, hummingbirds, chachalacas, and dozens of other colorful species feed and play while you enjoy a delicious homemade breakfast and fresh fruit smoothie. But the birds are just the beginning. Wild coatimundis (locally called gatos solos) frequently visit the garden, along with agoutis, iguanas, variegated squirrels, and occasionally even monkeys from the nearby Soberania National Park. Your host has spent years cultivating this wildlife haven, planting native trees and creating the perfect conditions for animals to thrive. Greg, your American host, has lived in Panama for over 20 years. A former electrical engineer and treasure hunter, he has become an expert on local wildlife and shares his knowledge with genuine enthusiasm. His historic Canal Zone home is filled with fascinating artifacts and artwork collected from decades of adventure in Panama. This is not a zoo - these are wild animals choosing to visit a sanctuary created with care and respect for nature. The experience offers incredible photography opportunities and a peaceful morning away from the city bustle. Perfect for bird enthusiasts, nature lovers, families with children, photographers, and anyone wanting a unique, authentic Panama experience that most tourists never discover.

I had a blast at Greg's house this morning. He is so welcoming, and I enjoyed watching him put out food for the coatis and birds. They arrived in droves. All kinds of birds from small hummingbirds to the large chachalakas. It was magical. There were other friendly and well traveled guests at breakfast and I gathered a treasure trove of information about exploring Panama. Highly recommend this experience, especially early on in your Panama visit. Greg shared a lot of useful info about fun things to do, good tour companies, etc. I'm so glad I chose this way to be introduced to so many of Panama's birds and the adorable coatis.

Greg was a wonderful host! His backyard is an amazing setting for all the birds. He has been able to gather there by feeding them and being very environmentally conscious. He has planted trees and other green shrubs that the animals and birds like and his appreciation and love of all of them was very evident and Made the experience very touching.
